Restless legs, or Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is considered a neurological disorder that causes uncontrollable urge to move the legs in an effort to relieve the urge. It may be associated with numbness, pins and needles sensation, creeping, burning or tugging of the legs. Various other symptoms have been described. It usually occurs at night, and is frequently relieved by moving the legs, or getting up and walking.
The exact cause is unknown. But physicians who treat varicose veins noticed that their patients who had varicose veins as well as RLS would frequently lose the RLS symptoms after treatment of varicose veins. It may be that the pressure of the diseased veins, known as venous insufficiency causes swelling or changes in the nerves. If you have RLS, talk to your doctor about an ultrasound evaluation of your superficial leg veins. Studies have shown that treating the condition that leads to varicose veins can relieve the symptoms of moderate to sever RLS.
